Uluru (Ayers Rock) is situated in the World Heritage listed Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park in the Northern Territory. For Aborigines, Uluru is at the very core of their existence with Dreamtime stories of the rock dating back thousands of years. As the traditional custodians of Uluru, the Aboriginal people are very willing to share many of the legends associated with the Dreamtime.

Uluru is the world’s largest monolith rising 348-metres and surrounded by gently undulating sand dunes which support a surprising variety of plants, birds, reptiles and frogs. The rock is nine kilometres in circumference and totally dominates the landscape. It is at dawn and dusk that the Rock weaves its most potent spell, glowing red. The shade and intensity of the colour however, depends on the angle of the sun, the amount of haze, dust, smoke and cloud presenting the atmosphere.

Uluru seems to generate some kind of mystical force that awakens a mountaineering instinct in the thousands of tourists that visit each year. But climbing Uluru is not for the faint hearted as the ascent is 1.6 kilometres and very steep in parts!

Location

The Uluru National Park is located 478 kilometres (297 miles) south-west of Alice Springs in central Australia.

Aside from Uluru there are a number of additional formations in Uluru National Park. The Olga’s (Kata Tjuta) are a group of rock domes about 30 kilometres (19 miles) west of Uluru. The Olga’s enjoy some of the most spectacular sunsets you will ever see.

How to get there

Ayers Rock, although somewhat remote, is easily accessible from all major domestic cities in Australia.
